Fair for Everyone!

It's my first Freewrite Friday and the word is "fair." Gypsy already blogged about the Douglas County Fair in Lawrence, so here's a little story about America's Vancouver...

In 2004, The Magician made some cookies for the Clackamas County Fair in Oregon. He didn't win anything other than a participation ribbon, but got some excellent feedback from the judges.

Then we moved north to Vancouver, Washington. Again, as a future pastry chef, The Magician was inspired to enter the fair. He made some Coconut-Pineapple Cupcakes, as well as caramels wrapped in waxed paper and pretty gold foil. We took everything to the fairgrounds, filled out the forms, turned in the cupcakes and candy (as well as my Rum Crumb Apple Pie) and saw that many of the entries already had blue ribbons! WTF!?

It turns out that the Clark County Fair really is. Fair. If you make something remotely edible you get a blue ribbon--and a premium (fancy fair talk for money). The Magician got a check for $2.50--but he was so disgusted by the lack of competition that he never even cashed it. And to this day it hangs, uncashed and expired, on his bulletin board.

I, on the other hand, deposited my $1.25 immediately. Hell, I've got bills to pay!
