After initially being put on the waiting list, The Star was admitted to the Vancouver School of Arts and Academics, the arts magnet school in our district. She had her orientation and forcasting at the school last night. She plans to focus/major in creative writing, with a healthy dose of band, theatre, visual art and movie making. As a new student, she'll be allowed to opt out of one of the six art forms and thinks she'll avoid dance. This means she'll have to take zero hour fitness to make up her PE credits, but considering that school starts at 9:35am, zero hour is not very early.
I'm happy that she got what she wanted, and also sort of glad that she first got a rejection. She handled it so well--1 day of tears, 1 day of silence about the matter, then acceptance and a plan to go to the neighborhood high school. I think things for me at her age came so easily and I still have a hard time with critisism and rejection. Maybe a small bit of disappointment will keep her grounded. Or maybe I'm just a mean mom.
