College Search

The Star is at the age where she is starting to think about life after high school. For several years now her dad has been extolling the virtues of living at home while attending college. However I have encouraged her to look elsewhere, within reason.

She's interested in The Evergreen State College, which has a very flaky reputation in the Pacific Northwest, since it is all about interdisciplinary programs and not about grades. I think it sounds good for her; quite a few graduates of her arts school go there. I've also suggested that she look at Western Washington in beautiful Bellingham, close to the Canadian border. I visited there back in 2001 with my friend Gretchen and thought it was a great town.

Lately it has seemed like The Artist is coming around to the fact that our daughter may be best served by a school that is not within commuting distance of our home. And then yesterday he suggested BYU. That's right: Brigham Young University! WTF?

From The Princeton Review:
#1 - Stone-Cold Sober Schools
#1 - Students Pray on a Regular Basis
#1 - Future Rotarians and Daughters of the American Revolution
#3 - Best College Library
#4 - Students Most Nostalgic for Ronald Reagan

He's convinced that many creative people (he named Brett Helquist) are BYU alums. And "they're not the scary, multiple-wives Mormans." Does he like the lack of student sex on that campus? As a parent, that sounds fine. Except when you realize that this often leads to marriage at 19--with a Mormon.
