Costume Party

October also means Halloween--our family's favorite holiday. (Can you tell I'm not so into September?) Each year The Artist and I have slaved over costumes, making custom latex masks and rigging flashing lights (him) and sewing everything from tuxedo coats to Jayhawk cheerleader outfits (me).

This year The Star will be 14--and an 8th grader. Surely she's too old to trick-or-treat. Of course, she doesn't think so. She and her best friend, The SkatePunk Poser, would like to stalk candy as rock stars. Poser wants to be someone I've never heard of (face it, Eliza, you're so old!) and The Star thought it would be fun to be Billie Joe. "But what would I do with this?" she asked, pointing to her lion's mane of yellow ringlets.

"If you want to be a musician, you could totally rock Courtney Love," I said and suggested that she look up some Courtney images on the internet. Wait! Not those! Not really what I had in mind! Oh, and Courtney, PUT YOUR SHIRT BACK ON!!

No, I was thinking red lips and runny eye makeup and a guitar. Not that we have a guitar. We have a saxophone (actually two), so maybe she could do Halloween as Lisa Simpson.

Rockstar Mommy's 3-year old daughter wants to be Dorothy. Being Kansas-born, I think The Star could totally get away with an ironic Dorothy now that she's a teen. And she'd get to have sparkly red shoes--what girl, of any age, doesn't love that!? (BTW, we now wear the same shoe size, so new shoes for baby = new shoes for mommy.)
