The Long Overdue Post in Which I Praise the Goddess Collective and My Friend Gretchen

I don't have time to write. I'm behind on my projects at work and leaving again on Monday for an entire week out of the office (but don't cry for me--it may be work, but it's in HAWAII).

Nonetheless, I cannot let another moment go by without saying a huge and sincere "Thank You" to Rikki and the Goddesses for a great time out last Friday. I finally am able to put Goddess names with real names and all of that with faces. And my expectations of fabulous-ness were completely met. I look forward to my next trip to Kansas and encourage everyone to give me a call if they ever get out to beautiful Portland, Oregon.

Also part of my vacation was a great lunch with Lisa, who was pregnant with her son when I was last in Lawrence and is now pregnant again; dinner with Shala, who is easily a Goddess in her own right; and the most comfortable guest bed ever at Mary and Richard's.

I also loved seeing Gretchen and her new-ish baby. I met Gretchen at the Merc when it first moved to 9th & Mississippi. I was hired to work in the deli and The Star (6 months old) went to day-care. As with many minimum-wage jobs, my take home pay hardly covered the cost of infant care, so when they reorganized the deli and I lost my position, I was happy to resume being a SAHM. When I was pregnant with The Magician, I took a home-office job as the coordinator for the Oread Neighborhood Association--and there was Gretchen again, on the Board. (For the record, she was the only one that would even acknowledge that I brought my tiny baby to Board meetings. I didn't get so much as a card from the others when he was born.)When I was ready to go back to work full time, I walked into the Chamber of Commerce to pick up an application and again, there was Gretchen, who offered to be a reference. She was the reason that job was fun, and it was a hard day when she left for a better opportunity in Washington state. I know I encouraged her to go, but a little bit of my love for Lawrence moved away with her. I won't be moving to Arkansas to be her "full time best friend" and she probably won't get to move here to be mine, but I know that we'll always be close.

Wow. Sappy.

So, yeah.

It was so great to meet you and hang out for a night of silly and fun. Your Lawrence connection helps me appreciate living in the area even more. I hope our paths cross often. Enjoy your time in Hawaii!

You are so sweet! I miss you and your kids like crazy. I quote your children all the time "I don't know what the hell that tastes like," and "We celebrate Christmas because we believe in Santa Claus!" It breaks my heart that I'm missing the teenage years . . .Seriously, move to Arkansas and become my full-time friend! No? Ok, let's make the visits more often then!Love you!Gretchen 10.23.06 - 7:03 am
