I'm still unemployed--and therefore about $50K from Goal No. 27. However, I have made progress on some of these pesky goals, such as No. 10, the quilt.
I began the quilt in October 2006 and made excellent progress for several weeks. But when I didn't get it done in time for our gallery's womens art show, I put it away. Now I have finished it in time to submit it to Sixth Street Gallery's 3rd Annual National Fiber Arts Show.
The quilt is based on Joseph Alanen's 1920 painting, Ilmatar, which shows the Finnish creation myth. In the story, the daughter of Heaven is so bored in the air that she comes down to the sea. The sea impregnates her and 900 years later she gives birth to Väinämöinen, the hero of Finland's national epic, The Kalevala.
The title of the piece is "And the Sea Woke Life Within Her," which is a line from the epic poem. It narrowly beat out "The Daughter of Heaven Gets Fucked by the Sea." Some people think our art gallery should be "family friendly" rather than true to the artists' visions. Vancouver is like that. Sometime I'll tell the story of the huge controversy The Artist started with his big dicked hermaphrodite painting.
If the piece is accepted to the show, I'm going to offer it for $900--more than 4 times what I have priced previous work. But it's large (56 x 40) and took many hours. I also like it--so I won't be disappointed when it doesn't sell.
It's good to complete this big project. I'm already working on smaller things for the Fiberarts Marketplace we have in conjunction with the show. As soon as I have pictures of my felted fortune cookies I'll post them--I have to admit that they rock.
