Recently I ran across a presentation that was titled, "5 Dangerous Things You Should Let Your Kids Do." The presenter was Gever Tulley, who runs a project called the Tinkering School, where kids use real tools to build real stuff.
- Play with fire
- Own a pocket knife
- Throw a spear
- Deconstruct appliances
- Break the DMCA (and 5 1/2. Drive a car)
I think mostly these things apply to younger kids. After all, most teens break copyright law and drive cars on a regular basis. But it did get me thinking about The Star and The Magician when they were younger.
One of the advantages of having a stay-at-home dad, rather than a SAHM, is the level of dangerous activities they did over the years. I would come home from work to find my 3-year-old son working away with a keyhole saw on a piece of foam insulation and my daughter, at 5, using an X-acto knife. Not what I would have recommended as safe. They also were encouraged to climb to the tops of trees,
