(The Old) No. 1: Yearly Grant Application

Last week I wrote my first grant application for The Artist. This one is offered by Artist Trust, a Washington State arts group, and fund projects up to $1500 for individual artists.

In the past 20 years, only nine grants have been given to Clark County (Vancouver) artists. These odds don't seem good. But then the program manager told me that only 1-5 Clark County artists apply each year. So by doing a little math, I figure that at the bare minimum 9% of local applicants have received grants. This is in line with the 13% of applicants that get funded statewide. Also, because of an highly successful fundraiser in early February, Artist Trust announced that they would be offering 20% more GAP grants in 2007. Whoo-hoo!

This year, in part thanks to my crusading, at least three visual artists affiliated with Sixth Street Gallery applied for GAP funding. Sometime this summer, we'll see if any of them get the recognition they deserve.
